Professional Chemists Need to Find Their Voice

Chemists need to speak up. We need to speak for the public on issues related to chemistry and make sure that we appear more often in written and verbal media. The OCQ was involved in several high-profile examples in 2021 where the public was at risk in chemically related issues concerning public health.

In July 2021, Health Canada tried to increase the level of glyphosate residue allowed in Canadian foods. The OCQ was instrumental in fighting against this proposed increase and helped to defeat it. A substantial report on the manufacture of hand sanitizers found that many were substandard, even though the facilities that made them were approved by Health Canada. The validity of lead testing in school drinking water in elementary schools in Quebec was disputed by the chemical profession.

Michel will relate the stories of how the OCQ investigated the incidents in question and used the media and their chemistry knowledge to protect the public and to raise the profile of the chemistry profession.
